I’ve been writing as long as I can remember. Although it is my objective in life, it wasn’t easy making it to this point. Hello, my name is Sir Ervin Williams III and in the immortal words of Langston Hughes’s Mother, “Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.” I was raised on the North-Side St. Louis, MO. On the 5200 block of Blair and Linton. My beginnings weren’t easy by far. North-Side St. Louis was full of dilapidated buildings, poverty, drugs, and washed up dreams. It was an understanding that if you lived there, you weren’t there by choice but because you were trapped. Our parents didn’t wake up and go to Wall Street jobs, our families didn’t have 401k plans, and what is a bank account?
Yes we were surviving by any means necessary, and we knew the aforementioned. I’ve seen men murdered over drugs and money, I’ve watched prostitutes sell their children for living wages, and I’ve watched the dreams of Black boys and girls be ripped away from them in their classrooms, by the teachers who claimed to love them. All of these incidents had entered and exited my life by the age of seven. So no, I’m probably not the typical poet you would read, I’m probably not your first choice on the bookshelf, and I’m perfectly fine with that. This book of poetry intertwine with bits and pieces of my life, might give you a better understanding of my little section of the world. My views, my experiences, and my opinions right or wrong, they are mine to own. Writing gave me the liberation to find myself, to free myself, and to become everything I dreamed of, as I slayed every nightmare, and every insecurity. While enduring horrendous situations, I came up with one concept. “If you believe you will survive, YOU WILL!” It’s simple as that. Enjoy your journey back to yourself and hopefully you can find a little token of love through my words, through my voice, and through my love.
